Breathing exercises for kids: a calm-down routine

One game here asks for a slow breath; a few others ask the body to go still. Put together after active play, that is a five-minute calm-down.

To be straight about what is here: Hopla is a website of movement games, and only one of them is built around breathing. In Pearl Dive the kid reaches far out to a clam and holds the stretch, slow and calm, while the screen says "Hold it... and breathe" and the clam pulses gently at about one breath every seven seconds. Nothing measures the breath — the webcam sees the body, not the lungs. What the games can do is slow the body down, and a slower body is where most breathing exercises for kids begin.

A five-minute calm-down after active play

  1. Pearl Dive, one or two rounds — reach, hold, breathe. With younger kids, say the breath out loud: in while reaching, slowly out while holding.
  2. Crane Stance — stand on one leg and hold still. Most kids find it easier on a slow breath out; let them notice that on their own.
  3. Ninja Kite — arms out like wings, lean gently to catch the gusts. Slow, wide, quiet movement.
  4. Freeze Dance to finish — a last bit of dancing, then stillness when the music stops.

Mindfulness exercises for kids in a classroom usually come down to the same three things: notice the body, slow the breath, be still for a moment. Holding completely still on one leg or on a frozen beat is attention on the body with nothing moving. The games do not teach meditation and do not claim to; they turn the slow, still part into something a seven-year-old wants to get right. Rookie is very forgiving; higher ranks ask for a farther reach and a longer, steadier hold on one leg.

Points are never deducted and nothing punishes a wobble. Two kids can calm down side by side sharing one score, each on their own rank. Free, no account, and the camera image is processed in the browser and never leaves the device. Before the active part, start with a five-minute warm-up.
